STEPS TO SUCCESS

#1

Time Management

Some exams require students to answer questions within a certain time limit. We teach our students to answers question efficiently.

#2

Mastery of Mathematics

We want students to understand mathematics. Not only fundamentals but a firm grasp of the basics.

#3

Strategic Thinking

A modified approach to the process fo elimination.

The ACT has a multitude of questions covering:

  • Pre-algebra
  • Elementary algebra
  • Intermediate algebra,
  • Plane geometry
  • Coordinate geometry
  • Elementary trigonometry

The distribution of question topics varies from test to test.

The SAT covers three categories of math content:

  • “Heart of Algebra” (linear equations, systems of linear equations, and linear functions)
  • “Problem Solving and Data Analysis” (statistics, modeling, and problem-solving skills)
  • “Passport to Advanced Math” (non-linear expressions, radicals, exponentials and other topics that form the basis of more advanced math)

The Cooperative Admissions Examination Program or COOP exam is a standardized admissions test used by many Catholic High schools in the Northern New Jersey and Hudson Valley region.

The exam is given once a year in the beginning of November on the Friday of New Jersey teacher convention break, to eighth-grade students who wish to attend Catholic high schools in the dioceses of Newark and Paterson. It consists of 7 separate tests designed to test students ability in Math, English, reasoning, critical thinking, etc., which is entirely multiple choice. The COOP deals with analogies, Mathematics assessment, reading comprehension, verbal and quantitative reasoning, and critical thinking.

Independent School Entrance Examination (ISEE) is an entrance exam used by many independent schools and magnet schools in the United States. Although it consists of three levels, we at the Black Math Academy focus on the Upper level (9th-12th grade), for entrance into high school. All levels consist of five sections: Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning, Reading Comprehension, Mathematics Achievement, and a 30-minute essay.

The ISEE can be seen as a parallel to the Secondary school admission test, or SSAT. On the Upper and Middle Levels, the quantitative reasoning section has 37 questions to be answered in 35 minutes. The mathematics achievement section has 47 questions to be answered in 40 minutes on the Middle and Upper levels. All questions found in the two math sections of the ISEE are linked to the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) Standards. The ISEE uses the following NCTM strands as a basis for the Quantitative Reasoning section:

  • Numbers and Operations
  • Algebra
  • Geometry
  • Measurement
  • Data Analysis and Probability
  • Problem Solving
